Student Visas

Persons wishing to study at Australian tertiary education facilities may do so by using the student visa stream.  Student visas allow holders to study in Australia across a wide variety of disciplines that include University and Vocational training courses.

Student visa applications are dealt with on the basis of the nationality of the student with differing countries being assessed by the Australian Immigration Department (DIAC) as to the level of risk of students contravening the purpose and conditions of the student visa.

Overseas students are required to fully fund their training in Australia and will pay fees at a higher rate than their Australian counterparts.   Student visa holders are allowed to work while studying however they are restricted to a maximum of 20 hours per week while the course is in session and unlimited during course recess.  If the student has a spouse the same work restrictions are imposed on the spouse.   Approval to work in Australia will only be granted once the student has arrived in Australia to undertake their course. Approval for work rights must be sought from the local DIAC office.

While student visas are normally associated with younger age applicants, mature age applicants are accepted for Australian student visas.

In certain circumstances student visas can lead holders to gain Australian permanent residence.  For more information please call us on 0845 644 5607.
